In a parallel manner, sport and military service have offered Canadians transformative opportunities to fulfill their potential. Those who rose to the challenge often achieved remarkable things, both on the battlefield and the field of competition. Cultivating discipline, determination, physical fitness and mental toughness, athletic pursuits often prepared Canadian men and women to excel while serving in the military. In turn, military training and active service developed outstanding reserves of courage, leadership, and a commitment to serve others that empowered many veterans returning to excel in both team sports and individual athletic pursuits. Veterans have left an indelible mark on Canadian sport, demonstrating perseverance, a tireless work ethic and willingness to push their limitations to maintain high standards and ideals. Sport has also helped many veterans readjust to civilian life, creating meaningful opportunities for healing and rehabilitation in the aftermath of physical and psychological injury.
